Water Academy

Program Overview

The Service Authority’s 2022 Water Academy is open to adults and high school seniors who live, work or attend school in Prince William County. This active, educational and award-winning program will be held on three Wednesdays in June and July 2022. For specific dates, times, locations and topics, please see the course syllabus below. New this year, the Water Academy will be offered in a hybrid format with two in-person sessions and one virtual session. In-person sessions will include a catered dinner.

Previous Water Academy participants have included teachers, engineers, scientists, environmental professionals, homeowners’ association members, community volunteers and retirees. Teachers in Prince William County Schools who complete Water Academy sessions will receive Continuing Education Credits. These Continuing Education Credits have been authorized by the PWCS Professional Learning Department.

H.L. Mooney Advanced Water Reclamation Facility

  1. Introduction to Service Authority: Enjoy a brief introductory presentation by General Manager Calvin D. Farr, Jr.
  2. Environmental Services & Water Reclamation Introduction:​ Learn about drinking & wastewater treatment standards and receive an overview of the H.L. Mooney Advanced Water Reclamation Facility.
  3. Tour of H.L. Mooney Advanced Water Reclamation Facility: Get an insider look at an active wastewater plant and learn how the Service Authority cleans wastewater that is later discharged into Neabsco Creek.

Wednesday, June 29

Virtual Session via Zoom

  1. Finance & Billing: Learn how your meter is read and how to understand your monthly bill.
  2. Project Management Office: Learn how our Capital Improvement Projects team determines the best location for new assets, like water tanks, in a virtual, hands-on planning activity.
  3. H2Go Kids Activity: Learn the basics of filtering water and wastewater with the hands-on Build-a-Filter activity.
  4. Human Resources & Organizational Development: Hear about career opportunities, Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs, and mentorship at the Service Authority.

  1. Operations & Maintenance: Learn about the Service Authority’s assets, like pipes, valves and water tanks, and how our Operations & Maintenance staff help ensure 99.999% reliable drinking and wastewater services for our customers.
  2. Truckz@Work: View Service Authority equipment demonstrations.
  3. Tour Water Tower & SCADA Room: Get up close and personal with one of the Service Authority’s water towers and learn about the intricate computerized system that keeps Service Authority facilities running.
  4. Water Academy Wrap-Up: Ask any remaining questions and receive answers from our Executive Management team.
