Water Academy

Program Overview

The Service Authority’s Water Academy is open to adults and high school seniors who live, work or attend school in Prince William County. This free, active, educational and award-winning program will be held on three Wednesdays in June and July 2021. For specific dates, times and topics, please see the course syllabus below. Applications for the 2021 Water Academy are now closed.

Previous Water Academy participants have included teachers, engineers, scientists, environmental professionals, homeowners’ association members, community volunteers and retirees. Prince William County school teachers who complete the course will be eligible for Continuing Education Credits (CEUs). CEUs obtained through completion of the Virtual Water Academy have already been authorized by the PWCS Offices of Student Learning & Professional Learning.

Wednesday, June 23, 6 to 7:30 p.m.
  1. Introduction to Service Authority: Presentation by Executive Management
  2. Environmental Services & Water Reclamation/Laboratory: Learn about drinking & wastewater treatment standards and testing and about water quality in Prince William County
  3. Engaging with Our Customers: Overview of the Service Authority’s communications and community outreach programs, including a hands-on virtual activity
Wednesday, June 30, 6 to 7:30 p.m.
  1. Operations & Maintenance: Learn about the Service Authority’s assets, like pipes, valves and water tanks, and how our Operations & Maintenance staff help ensure 99.999% reliable drinking and wastewater services for our customers
  2. Truckz@Work: View Service Authority equipment demonstrations
  3. H.L. Mooney Advanced Water Reclamation Facility: Take a video tour of our wastewater treatment plant, followed by a live Q&A session
Wednesday, July 7, 6 to 8:00 p.m.
  1. Finance & Billing: Learn how your meter is read, how to understand your monthly bill, and how the Service Authority has assisted customers throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic
  2. Engineering & Planning: Learn how our Capital Improvement Projects team determines the best location for new assets, like water tanks, in a virtual, hands-on planning activity
  3. Breakout Sessions: Learn about other Service Authority Divisions, including Human Resources & Organizational Development and Data Management
  4. Virtual Water Academy Wrap-Up: A final chance to ask any remaining questions from our Executive Management team.
