Water Academy

Program Overview

For those who are interested in future sessions of the Water Academy, the following is a brief overview of the program.

This free, four-session Water Academy is open to adults and high school seniors. It is an active, educational and hands-on program held on four Wednesdays in June and July from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the H.L. Mooney Advanced Water Reclamation Facility (AWRF) and the Raymond Spittle Building in Woodbridge.

If you are interested in learning about the science and technology behind water and wastewater treatment, touring Service Authority facilities, learning about career and internship opportunities in the water and wastewater industries and learning more about your role in environmental stewardship, then we encourage you to apply for the Water Academy.

Previous Water Academy participants have included teachers, engineers, scientists, environmental professionals, homeowners’ association members, community volunteers and retirees. Prince William County school teachers who complete the course may be eligible for Continuing Education Credits.

The goal of the Water Academy is to foster understanding and appreciation for the many ways the Service Authority contributes to community health, environmental stewardship, and economic vitality in Prince William County. Those who participate in three or more sessions of the 2021 Water Academy will receive a certification of completion.

There is no fee to apply to or attend the Water Academy and the Service Authority provides dinner at each session. The program topics include a Service Authority overview, a tour of Mooney AWRF and laboratory facilities, a discussion about water quality, an explanation of customer water metering and billing, heavy equipment demonstrations, an engineering and planning tabletop exercise and more.

If you would like to apply for the 2021 Water Academy, email outreach@pwcsa.org and we will add you to the application list.

Water Academy Will Return in Summer 2021!

The Service Authority has decided to cancel the summer 2020 session of its award-winning Water Academy due to the Coronavirus pandemic and social distancing precautions. We will return in the summer of 2021 with an engaging program that offers a behind-the-scenes look at the Service Authority and a deeper understanding of local water resources.
